Creating a paint splodge effect in Photoshop CS5

This is a beginner tutorial for Photoshop and it assumes you have all the necessary software installed on your machine. You will be walked through step by step in how to create the effect.

Step 1) Creating the document

First we will need to create a new document. I chose to create the document 500×500 and fill it with a radial gradient. #102f40 to black.

Step 2) Adding the Text

For this tutorial I will only be doing 1 letter, because once you learn how to create the effect you will be able to do it over again with multiple letters.

Step 3) Adding the splodge

Select the pen tool (P) and simply draw something that would resemble a paint splatter or splodge. Not every splodge will look the same so take your find and create one that you like. Make sure it is filled with the same color as you filled your letter with.

Step 4) Adding Layer Styles

Double click the layer tab to bring up the layer styles menu. From here use the layer styles below in the image

Once you have these layer styles make sure you copy them and page them on your other layers as well.

Step 5) Positioning

Now you need to move the splodge over the letter so that they come together. This will take some time to achieve the look you want so don’t worry if it is not perfect the first time.

From here you can add some detail by using the pen tool again to create some smaller drips that will go across the letter. This is your personal preference but remember to always add the layer styles each time you create a new drip.

Congratulations you have successfully completed this tutorial. As always the source files will be available for download for your personal reference.
