Today we will be creating a tutorial on how to add a texture to the font treatment you are using. The application of choice today will be Adobe CS5, but this effect will work in all versions of Photoshop so do not worry.
Step 1 ) Creating the Background setting for your text
For the purpose of this tutorial we used the previous supplied Photoshop default background and changed the color to black. If your layer is locked you can just double click the layer and you should now have an unlocked layer with the option to change the background color.
Once you have the background color changed and the layer locked, make sure you save your application and create a new layer.
Step 2) Creating the font Treatment
For the purpose of this tutorial we will go ahead and Select the font tool ( T ) and then click on the canvas. From here you can type whatever you please, we have chosen to type ” Adding A texture ,” to stay with the theme of this tutorial. Make sure you set the font to a visible color and you can see we have blown the text up so that it will be visible when we add the texture.
Once you have completed this step make sure to lock the layer and save.
Step 3) Adding the Texture
For this tutorial you will need to find a texture that you like that you believe would enhance your content. We have gone with a metal grunge texture for now within this tutorial. You can find textures here Textures!
Once you find the texture make sure to bring it into photoshop and desaturate the colors. You just want to add some contrast to your text, you do not want to grab the textures colors. To do this go to Images > Adjustments > Desaturate. ! Important ! Make sure that the texture is on its own layer at the top of the layer styles.
Now set this layer style to Overlay and notice the change to your document. The texture is now within your text and you can drag this texture layer around as you see fit to accomplish your style.
Make sure to play around with different textures to get the effect you want for your specific project.
